Pure, Natural, Skin-Compatible Formulations. With over 30 years of combined medical research and development experience, the founders of Josephine Bissing™ Dermaceuticals bring relevant advances in medical science to the field of cosmetics. The goal is to go beyond formulations that combine small quantities of natural ingredients with large quantities of unnatural ingredients, such as surfactants, preservatives, coloring agents, fragrances, liposomes, alkalizers, stabilizers, alcohols, and emulsifiers, to create products that are chemically pure and that promote and preserve the long-term health and integrity of the skin. While most commonly used cosmetic ingredients are safe in small quantities when applied to completely healthy skin, many are problematic for skin that is sensitive, dehydrated, irritated, inflamed, oily, eczematous or prone to dermatitis or blemishes. The two top cosmetic allergens are fragrance and preservatives. See H. Maibach and P. Engasser, Dermatitis Due to Cosmetics. Emulsifiers and lanolin also may cause allergic reactions. Various investigators have found so many instances of sensitization to the parabens in various topical therapeutic agents that most pharmaceutical manufactures have replaced them with other preservatives. See Alexander A. Fisher, Contact Dermatitis (3rd ed.). Yet, almost all cosmetic preparations contain parabens. As we age our skin becomes more sensitive and dehydrated. Factors such as stress, poor diet, air travel, hormone imbalances, lack of sleep, and pollution ensure that almost no one has problem-free skin all the time. Accordingly, Josephine Bissing™ products do not include those chemicals that frequently contribute to skin problems. Our products are free of fragrance, dye, methyl paraben, butyl paraben, propyl paraben, imidazolidinyl urea, diazoldinyl urea, alcohol, sodium hydroxide (lye), sodium laurel sulfate, isopropyl myristate, ethanol, and quaternarium-15. Because they contain emulsifiers, we also do not use creams or lotions.
Technologically Advanced Delivery System. Central to the safety and effectiveness of the Josephine Bissing™ products is the proprietary HydroSponge,™ which serves as a chemical free delivery vehicle for the treatments. What looks like an ordinary piece of foam is actually a functional polymer that has FDA (510)k approval for use in chronic wounds. It is also used for transdermal drug delivery and as the “scaffold” for tissue generation in organ development. The foam has a patented hydrophilic coating which allows it to absorb and retain large amounts of active ingredients for release when pressure is applied to the HydroSponge.™ This technology provides products that are “clean” and potent. According to Barry Molk, M.D., medical advisor to several drug companies, “currently a major focus in pharmacology is on more advanced delivery vehicles. Drug companies are spending millions of dollars to develop and/or license delivery systems that are safer and more efficient. It is increasingly recognized that a drug’s effectiveness is a function of both the formulation and the method of delivery”. The importance of delivery also holds true for cosmeceutical products.
Josephine Bissing (1892-1970), founded Lady Josephine, a cosmetic/skin care company in 1920. Until the war interfered with the availability of ingredients, her advanced formulations grew in popularity and the company thrived. Although she was unable to continue business operations, she did continue to use her preparations on her own skin, which remained youthful and wrinkle-free.
